GRIZZLY® DPSH-B Mobile Unit

The GRIZZLY® is a self-propelled Dynamic Probing Super Heavy (DPSH) rig with geotechnical drilling capability, used for:
- Compaction control
- Site investigation
- Geotechnical drilling and soil sampling (windowless push tube sampling and Standard Penetration Test (SPT) split spoon sampling) for chemical and geotechnical analysis.
CMW Geosciences began operating the GRIZZLY® rig in early 2021 across a range of sectors. Notably, it has been deployed on a number of specialist rail sampling projects, in addition to various internal opportunities.
The GRIZZLY® rig typically features three main capabilities:
- DPSH-B (Dynamic Probing Super Heavy): dynamically driving a solid cone into the ground and is a technique directly comparable to a SPT (Standard Penetration Test)
- Windowless Sampling: boring through shallow soft soils to investigate the substrata to gain a profile of the ground conditions and to facilitate soil sampling for chemical and geotechnical analysis
- Augering: similar to traditional augur drilling rigs, useful to carry out shallow intrusive investigation

The GRIZZLY® rig is small, lightweight and manoeuvrable, enabling access to locations which traditional equipment cannot easily reach. It is easy to set up on location, which in turn delivers faster position completion and allows teams to complete more in one day.
As an in-house resource, using the GRIZZLY® rig provides greater flexibility - being operated by our own engineers and geologists enables other tasks to be completed as part of a single mobilisation (water monitoring, borehole logging, test pit logging, etc) and eliminates the need for sub-contractors in many instances.
The GRIZZLY® rig also includes X, Y and Z GPS survey for as-drilled positions, therefore there is no need for additional GPS survey.
A time-efficient resource, the GRIZZLY® rig is ideal for sites with limited access. Its DPSH testing capability includes real-time data which enables decisions to be made on-site and much more quickly than in the past.
